Milk trains

Westerns were latterly more used on the main line milk trains to London

Warships were also used on main line milk trains but diminished as their numbers did

Sulzers were later used on branch line milk trains

North British were originally used for branch work until all withdrawn by the end of 1971

The number of milk tanks in a train depended upon demand but 15 was
the maximum for a type 4 loco as a loaded tank was as heavy as coach.

The standard BR livery was silver which became dirty through spillage
but some pre Nationalization colours still survived (C)

Some tanks showed external strapping (L), off centre steps & filling caps (C)
or uniquely a new livery branding of St Ivel (R)

An old surviving livery "Express Dairy- Milk for London" (C)

Tank in original orange colour (L) and twin filler tank (C) which can
accommodate two different grades of milk

Another pre war livery "MMB Milk" (C)
